locations
New Brooklyn
After an intense, localized earthquake in 2012, the northern part of this New Amsterdam borough has become an analog hipster enclave, with its damaged roads, unreliable cell service and lax rules attracting creative types and partiers wanting to live off-the-grid.
Broken Land
A massive underground club in an abandoned subway station in New Brooklyn. Hard to find and even harder to get into, it is the epicenter of the Rust and techno scene.
GR€€D
The exact opposite of Broken Land, this Meat Packing District bottle service club is the destination for finance bros and the sugar babies who love them. Its rotating “sin” theme is currently an ode to capitalist wealth, featuring stock tickers, money print couches, and a brass replica of the Wall St. “Charging Bull” statue. Run with an iron fist by Cyrus, this opulent shrine to extravagance is Theo’s first job in the city.
The Tower
An empty water tower that sits high atop Broken Land, used by Deadalus and his inner circle as a crash pad, studio, and after-after-hours party spot.
Werk!
Combination coffee bar, print shop, and co-working space in Green Pointe, Breukelen. An ironic re-imagining of cube-farm office culture, it acts as a hub for Breukelen makers, writers, and gig economy hustlers. Eryn, the barista, is a sweetheart.
Art School
An abandoned, contemporary art museum in South Williamsburg. Once the gentrified home of co-opted outsider art, it now lays in ruin post-quake. Its sculpture garden, art gallery, and gift shop are used by the Mercury 7 to train in the use of their powers.
Dark Room
Theo’s live & work loft in Bushwick. Sitting on the edge of the earthquake zone, it’s cramped, cheap, and covered with his artsy photos. The blacked out windows, ostensibly to help develop his pics, make it easy to sleep all day and go out all night.
The Gates
Matching archways that sit on either side of Breukelen. Made of charred wood and flowing white drapes, they greet visitors from the East and West to warn that they are about to enter an untamed no man’s land.
2012 Memorials
Three mysterious Zen gardens that dot the edge of the Breukelen quake devastation. Black stone obelisks and red, raked sand stand as a reminder of those killed in the earthquake that locals simply refer to as “The Breaking.”
